How to Get a Visa for Australia


Anybody who wants to travel to Australia is required to get a visa if they are not an Australian citizen. Because tourism is one of Australia’s main industries, there are many requests to come to Australia each year. Australia has embraced the web in its visa process, thus making paper documents not typically necessary.

STEP 1
Visit the web page for the Australia Electronic Travel Authority (see “Resources”). Citizens of the United States, Canada and a handful of other countries can use this site to apply for a visa. Click on “Apply for Visa” at the top of the page. Enter the requested information on the next page. This page asks for basic identifying information such as your name, birth date, passport number and country of citizenship. After each line on this page has been completed, click “Next.” It is important to be truthful because the information will be verified before a visa is offered.
STEP 2
Choose the type of visa you are applying for. The Australian Electric Travel Authority offers “Visitor” and “Short Validity Business” visas. Anybody who is planning on being in the country for less than three months at a time without working should apply for a Visitor visa by clicking in the window next to “Visitor.” Those who will be in the country on business should choose the “Short Validity Business” option.
STEP 3
Check the box stating that you are outside of Australia. A person who is already inside of Australia cannot apply for a visa using the Australia Electronic Travel Authority system. Type in your e-mail address and complete the other required information needed on the page and click “Next.” The information required on this page will again ask about birth dates and passport numbers.
